'With The Lights Out' é a caixa de luxo de material inédito do Nirvana lançado em 2004 em edição limitada. É composta de três CD’s, um DVD e um livreto de 60 páginas com histórias da banda e fotos. ”With The Lights Out” traz nos seus três CDs 61 faixas raras e inéditas e outras 20 no DVD, que inclusive conta com várias cenas gravadas no Brasil. Mas o supra-sumo está mesmo nos CDs. Além de inúmeras faixas demo de canções que mais tarde ganharam sua versões definitivas nos álbuns oficiais, também estão presentes músicas que nunca viram a luz do dia ou que foram executadas apenas em um ou outro show. Faixas ao vivo, tanto de shows como gravadas para rádio, são outro atrativo.
O título vem da letra do single de 1991 do Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit".
O box foi planejado para ser lançado em 2001, mas foi adiado por uma batalha legal com Courtney Love, a viúva do cantor do Nirvana, Kurt Cobain.
Grande parte da disputa centrou-se na música inédita "You Know You're Right", gravada em janeiro de 1994 durante a sessão final de estúdio da banda. Grohl e Novoselic queriam para o box set, mas Love bloqueou seu lançamento e os processou pelo controle do legado do Nirvana. O processo de Love afirmou que "as partes têm conceitos fundamentalmente diferentes de como administrar o legado musical e artístico de Kurt Cobain", o que resultou "em um impasse na tomada de decisões". Ela acreditava que "You Know You're Right" seria "desperdiçado" em um box set e, em vez disso, pertencia a uma compilação de disco único semelhante ao 1 dos Beatles.
Em 2002, a batalha legal foi resolvida e "You Know You're Right" apareceu na compilação "best-of" Nirvana. Isso abriu caminho para o que se tornou o box set With The Lights Out, que chegou em novembro de 2004, mais de três anos após sua data de lançamento original, mas com mais música do que o prometido originalmente, incluindo uma demo acústica de "You Know You're Right".
Cada um dos três CDs representa vagamente as raras gravações de três períodos da história do Nirvana, alinhados com os três álbuns de estúdio da banda, Bleach, Nevermind e In Utero, que foram lançados em 1989, 1991 e 1993, respectivamente. O DVD contém raras apresentações ao vivo e ensaios de toda a carreira da banda.
Ele inclui um livreto de 60 páginas que contém notas de capa de Thurston Moore da banda de rock americana Sonic Youth e do jornalista Neil Strauss, bem como fotografias e um catálogo cronológico da história de gravação da banda, incluindo sessões de estúdio, aparições na televisão e no rádio, apresentações ao vivo e sessões de gravações demo em casa.
A sessão de rádio da banda em 6 de maio de 1987 na KAOS 89.3 FM em Olympia, Washington, foi erroneamente rotulada como sendo de 17 de abril de 1987.
